Chapter 13

The Master’s mages had torn up the street leading from the station to the village by the time I got there, but I summoned my powers to repair it as I bolted toward the screams. The Defenders from the train weren’t far behind with their pistols drawn, and the moment we reached the innermost shops of Tellish, we were surrounded by the Master’s mages on all sides.

They catapulted from balconies and sent their magic to destroy everything in their path, and while treacherous flames blocked doorways and windows to keep the citizens locked inside, whole walls collapsed inward to crush them as well.

The few people who’d managed to escape their homes were barricaded in corners as the streets flooded up to their knees, and a fierce, howling wind threw debris up everywhere until my eyes were burning from it.

“Flumen mages, clear these streets!” I ordered the Defenders. “Fire on all targets as you go. The rest of you, fan out, we need to help the residents escape this!”

The Defenders dispersed as they summoned their powers, and I ran straight ahead as fast as I could while the water sloshing against my legs gathered a strong current. I fired on every tattered looking mage I came across while I kept my Terra powers sparked, and I managed to catch five walls before they could fully collapse in on themselves.

The possessed mages’ presence made the air heavy with static energy as I fought to reach higher ground, and I could sense the erratic nature of their powers as they wielded them without restraint. This only added to how disorienting the attack was as the elements warred against all of us, but I hadn’t expected the Master’s troops to be so uncoordinated in their tactics.

It was clear he had very little control over these mages as the ground broke open to drop both citizens and mages far below, and their lack of discernment between the two sides meant anything could happen out here tonight.

By now, the water had risen past my thighs, and the current ran in multiple directions while men and women were caught up in it. They screamed and gasped for air as they were dragged away from their families, and when I made it to a central intersection, I scanned every soldier in the vicinity for a sign of the Master’s Flumen Mages.

I managed to take down seven before the street broke open under me, but I caught my fall and resealed the street to keep from drowning in a pit. I left a wide enough crack in the cobblestone so the water could continue to drain away, though, and after I killed another four Flumen Mages on the next street over, my Defenders began to overpower our attackers.

Then I moved on to the Aer Mages, and I stalked them around shadowy corners before they could suffocate any more victims. As the winds let up by a few degrees, I was able to see more clearly, and I rubbed my burning eyes as I climbed up onto a stone wall to get a clear line of fire.
